What Should I Do If My Tooth Gets Knocked Out?

//What Should I Do If My Tooth Gets Knocked Out?

No one wants to experience having a tooth knocked out. It is painful and leaves an unappealing gap in your smile. In this video, Dr. Nawrocki describes different outcomes of a tooth getting knocked out in children and adults and the best recommendations for what to do when it happens.

If this happens to an adult, the chances of regeneration or trying to put the same tooth back into the mouth successfully are very minimal.

When an adult tooth gets knocked out, the blood supply is severed and will not provide any blood to the tooth if you try to replant that same adult tooth back into the jaw. The blood supply is not enough to maintain the vitality of the tooth.

If a tooth is knocked out of a child’s mouth and has left a wide opening, you can place it in a container filled with milk and bring it to your dentist for implantation. The dentist will reinitiate and clean the socket, place the tooth back in the right position, and fix it to the adjacent teeth so the child can keep that original tooth for later years.
