Cavity

A cavity is one of the most common dental problems in the United States. They are permanently damaged areas on the tooth’s surface that develop into tiny holes or openings. It results from tooth decay, with the symptoms varying depending on how large the cavity is.

Common Cavity Symptoms

  • Sensitive teeth
  • Toothache or pain
  • Holes or openings in teeth
  • Pain when eating or drinking something sweet, cold, or hot
  • White, black, or brown tooth stains
  • Pain when biting down

Foods with carbohydrates combined with the bacteria in your mouth turn into acids and form plaque that clings to teeth. The plaque and acids dissolve tooth enamel and create cavities. Additionally, as we age, our gums begin to pull away from our teeth, exposing the roots to plaque. The more sugar and high-carb foods included in a diet, the more likely you are to get cavities.

Common Cavity Causes

  • Poor brushing
  • Clingy foods and drinks such as sugar, soda, milk, cereal, etc.
  • Lack of fluoride
  • Dry mouth
  • Acid reflux disease
